Migration Choreographies. Decolonial Work Concepts in European Contemporary Dance

Dr. des. Johanna Hilari

The second-book project deals with migration and cultural mobility in European contemporary dance. Based on research on migration movements in the field of art and culture, on social choreographies as an artistic negotiation of socio-political phenomena and on post-migrant theater, this project examines cultural mobility and migration movements from both a dance studies and a decolonial perspective. The project focuses on the artistic work of seven choreographers who have migrated from Latin America or have a Latin American migration background, produce in the European contemporary dance scene and deal with decolonial practices, indigenous ontologies and criticism of racism in an intersectional way. The respective artistic ‚aesthetics‘ not only reflect and criticize (global and colonial) social orders, but at the same time shape and constitute certain (institutional and cultural-political) orders of the European contemporary dance scene. The project summarizes these exemplary artists and works under the term ‚migration choreographies‘ in order to work out certain decolonial practices and aesthetics in contemporary dance practice as social choreography and thereby discuss structural changes and reflections in relation to the European dance scene shaped by migration.
